From the Group Chat: Sydney Sweeney’s Press Tour, Moses Martin, and Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio

EDITOR’S NOTE

Happy Sunday. Not to terrify anyone, but there are approximately 10 days left in 2025 — which seems like precisely the right time to tackle everything I said I’d accomplish this year. That includes:

  • Trading my trusty airport leggings for these equally comfortable yet elevated pants — apparently key to tricking everyone into thinking I’m a Fashion Person.

  • Applying deodorant at the right time, which as I recently discovered, is not first thing in the morning. Apologies to everyone I’ve ever known over the last 20ish years.

  • Overcoming my fear of dyeing my hair (thanks, high school DIY disasters) by trying “color melting” — the subtle, low-maintenance technique that’s overtaking balayage.

  • Swapping my white sneakers for one of these surprisingly neutral colors, which are set to take over in 2026 (I’ve been eyeing the first pair for months).

  • Reading this best-selling book, which basically everyone (my mom, my sister, Taylor Swift, Barack Obama) has recommended and is now getting the Netflix treatment.

Deeply important information

👀 An entire face of makeup with just one product? Yes, it’s possible — and some pros even swear by it. BRB, decluttering our entire cosmetics bag.

🫦 In what is absolutely news to us, this was the alleged scent of 2025. Let’s just say it’s giving NSFW, not vanilla.

🤯 If keeping backless shoes on is the bane of your existence, Kendall Jenner has a simple trick that’ll frankly change everything. No, really.

🩲 FYI, the color of your underwear on New Year’s Eve could set the tone for your whole year. So, we’re all wearing black, yes?

🤨 So long, coats. The shearling trend is coming for another wardrobe staple — and we’re not sure whether to be delighted or disturbed.

I can't look away.
Sydney Sweeney

It must be asked: Is Sydney Sweeney finally emerging from her terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year? For the last few weeks, the future Mrs. Nate Jacobs has made the rounds with Amanda Seyfried for The Housemaid apparently quite good — and they have become 2025’s unlikeliest dynamic duo. They revealed their go-to karaoke song (same) and favorite childhood bands (Sweeney’s is…a first), debated relationship red flags (at least Sweeney is self-aware), did whatever in the name of cleaning ASMR this is, and answered questions for Vanity Fair’s lie detector test — including the one about Sweeney that, per Seyfried, is “on everyone’s minds.” Plus, there’s Sweeney’s surprisingly good style streak. Highly questionable Marilyn Monroe-inspired look aside, she’s stepped out in our dream coat closet, made a compelling case for the wide-belt revival, and managed to out-fashion herself five times in one day. She even, speaking of fashion, addressed that American Eagle campaign. “I’m against hate and divisiveness,” she told People, adding, “I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign.”

Sure, Sweeney’s comments might be five months — and one highly criticized nonresponse response — too late, but it’s a notable shift after a series of PR missteps that were messier than an episode of Euphoria. In addition to trying to break the Guinness World Record for Most Ad Campaigns in a Year (OK, not actually), she tried to sell us her bathwater, was all over the Bezos wedding (though that might not have been as wildly random as it seemed), started dating the Scooter Braun (we’re still recovering from their very enthusiastic PDA), and had a space-themed birthday party that “left a lot to unpack.” Her last three films haven’t exactly been blockbusters either — Christy reportedly had one of the worst box office debuts of all time, which Sweeney seemed to shrug off, saying “we don’t always just make art for numbers” (sure). All of which brings us to the obvious question: Is this a calculated redemption tour or just convenient timing? Better yet, does any of it mean we’re any closer to Mamma Mia! 3?

Wait, who is this nepo baby?
Gwyneth Paltrow and Moses Martin

You’d be forgiven for thinking Apple Martin borrowing one of her mom’s iconic ’90s dresses was the headline from the NYC Marty Supreme premiere. But the real story? Moses Martin, in the flesh. The youngest child of the consciously uncoupled couple was the only family member we knew basically nothing about — that is, until now. Like his older sister, the 19-year-old (yes, we’re ancient) appears to be following in his father’s footsteps. Not only was he featured on the Coldplay song “Humankind,” but his alt-rock band, People I’ve Met, released their first single earlier this month, which, naturally, already has a few famous fans (looking at you, Reese Witherspoon). That comes after Moses spent some of the summer opening for Royel Otis, followed by his return to studying at Brown University in the fall. Oh, and as for how he reacted to what his mom described as “a lot — a lot” of sex scenes in Marty Supreme? “Not great,” she told Seth Meyers. “He’s not into that.” Can’t say we’re surprised.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence

Despite the fact that we have no authority to do so, we’re giving Jennifer Lawrence a Pulitzer, an Oscar, and, sure, a Nobel Prize for making the notoriously stone-faced Leonardo DiCaprio laugh — sorry, chuckle — during their extremely entertaining Actors on Actors interview (this has got to be a troll, right?). Not to mention, she got him to answer a question we’ve wondered about since 1997: Has he ever rewatched Titanic? Our hearts will not go on from this exchange.

Need something to watch.
Will Arnett and Laura Dern

Sure, the separation-to-stand-up pipeline is not exactly the newest concept (see: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), but in Is This Thing On?, there’s no dramatic blowup between Alex (Will Arnett) and Tess (Laura Dern). No affair. No betrayal. Just two people, who after 20 years and two kids together, simply…grow apart. Which is how middle-aged Alex accidentally discovers the therapeutic benefits of stand-up. But unlike every man you know whos tried it, hes actually funny — helped along by a cast that includes real comedians (like Amy Sedaris); Bradley Cooper as Balls, a self-absorbed actor and Alex’s closest friend; Andra Day as Balls’s lovably irritated wife; and Sean Hayes in a small role. Not too shabby for Cooper’s third go at directing and what some are calling “exactly the kind of movie we need more of.”
