If you’re looking for books to help start the conversation about a new baby joining the family, you have plenty of good, straightforward options. But we like this one because it adds a dash of humor and whimsy to what can be an anxiety-inducing topic. A mouse who’s actually almost too clever for his own good. This is a great picture book for kids with slightly longer attention spans, with a pleasant rhyming cadence and lots of opportunities for doing funny voices. ($11.22, Amazon)

If you don’t already know the tale of Eloise, you have to do something about that immediately. In this first of several books in a hilarious series, the mischievous 6-year-old shows you around the iconic NYC landmark where she lives—and causes the best kind of chaos. ($16.22, Amazon)

With beautiful artwork in a mostly-black-and-white style even newborns might appreciate, this Caldecott Medal-winning book is one of our favorites for bringing the night to a calming close. The “Magic Treehouse” books are a perfect intro to chapter books, when you’re ready to start reading longer and slightly more complicated stories at night.
