The Story

The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII…by this much.

How much?

25-22. That came after a 19-19 tie, bringing the Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers into overtime — the second ever in Super Bowl history. That’s when a touchdown from Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr delivered the W, with three seconds left in overtime. It came after the 49ers led 10-3 at halftime and led 22-19 during OT.

Whoa.

Yup, it went down to the wire. Still, some of the biggest moments happened off the field: the NFL couldn’t help itself with Taylor Swift reaction shots. Travis Kelce yelled at head coach Andy Reid before hugging it out. Meanwhile, Nickelodeon delivered for the kids — and memes. Now, QB Patrick Mahomes is a three-time Super Bowl MVP. The Chiefs are the first team to win the Super Bowl back to back since the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004.

Let’s cut to commercial break.

Beyoncé didn’t break the internet with her Verizon commercial. But she did when announcing a country-inspired album and dropping two singles. No one mourned the (lack of SpongeBob in the) “Wicked” trailer. We finally got answers with Michael CeraVe. And Google brought the tears.

As for our confessions…

Usher’s halftime show had us feeling all caught up with classics like “Yeah!,” “Superstar,” and “Love in this Club.” But he couldn’t do it alone, bringing out his boo Alicia Keys, H.E.R., will.i.am, and Jermaine Dupri. Lil Jon and Ludacris helped Usher show everyone how A-Town gets down.

When the Chiefs and 49ers last faced off at the Super Bowl in 2020, Mahomes and KC took home the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The Chiefs also won again last year, against the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, they did it again, potentially solidifying their spot as a new football dynasty.

israel-hamas war

Rafah

Overnight, Israel’s military said it launched a wave of strikes on Rafah, a southern Gaza city where more than 1 million Palestinians have taken shelter. The news came as Israel’s military also said it had rescued two hostages from captivity there. Meanwhile, international observers have been warning about the danger to Palestinians in the densely populated city bordering Egypt, as Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu promised “safe passage for the civilian population so they can leave,” without providing details of how that could happen. The toll of the war, based on information from the Gaza Health Ministry and Israeli officials, is now more than 28,000 Palestinians, with more than 1,200 people killed in Hamas’s Oct 7 attack.

Former President Trump. Over the weekend, Trump said he’d back Russia doing "whatever the hell they want" to any NATO member country that doesn't pay its dues. At a campaign rally, Trump recounted a story from his presidency in which an unnamed NATO leader asked if the US would defend them if Russia attacked. Trump responded: not if their NATO bills aren’t paid. NATO's 31 members have agreed on spending 2% of their GDP on defense. But one report found less than half do so. Trump’s comments drew criticism from both sides of the aisle, and the White House called his comments “unhinged.”

...Oh and speaking of criticism, the Biden admin is facing its own. Yesterday, it came out that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is back in the hospital after complications from surgery. Meanwhile, a new poll found more than 85% of voters think President Biden is too old to serve as president after last week’s special counsel report.

Who’s tapped into the future…

Imran Khan. Yesterday, Pakistan’s former prime minister used artificial intelligence to deliver a speech…from jail. Khan and his party were barred from running in parliamentary elections — but many still ran as independents last week, winning the most parliamentary seats. In response, Khan’s party used AI to create a video of Khan congratulating supporters on the win. Experts say the move demonstrates how AI can get around suppression, but it also raises concerns about the potential for misuse.
